The Longhorn Miao's Love Songs
Photography of Longhorn Miao and their life environments.
Longhorn Miao, one of the Miao branches, lives in the mountains of North-western China. The designation of Longhorn Miao stems from the women’s longhorn-shaped chignon. They have experienced an isolated way of life for a long time and retain traditional cultural characteristics. As the Longhorn Miao's culture and traditions are only passed down verbally, some of the historical content and its significance is lost and misrepresented in the post-colonial contexts. The culture and way of life of this ethnic group is a useful reference point for other research into minorities in South-west China.

My research will use animation as a form of ethnographic documentary, exploring animation’s potential to document the underrepresented cultures of minorities. Drawing on approaches and methods of animated documentaries that involve minority issues and preliminary studies of the Longhorn Miao, I plan to prepare an animated documentary with this group. This project’s contribution to knowledge lies in expanding animation as an innovative form of ethnographic documentary, defining a new territory of ethnographic animation and use of co-design principles to give voice to the Miao people.
